Bank's Island is a very important area for the Gitxaala Nation. It was historically used as a resource harvesting area and certain houses maintained summer camps on the island on an annual basis. Today, the community still relies heavily on the resources that live in the environment surrounding Banks Island. Despite our opposition to the Yellow Giant Gold Mine, the project went ahead and now, as a result of negligence on the part of the company and the permitting agency, we are dealing with an environmental disaster that has yet to be dealt with. G.E.M Manager James Witzke spoke to the CBC regarding the disaster.
